Feasibility and Environmental Impact of Synthetic and Natural Graphite for LIB Anodes in the US
Industry Advisory
June 2023 -
As part of an independent study at Northwestern University, this research delves into the viability and ecological implications of employing synthetic and natural graphite as anodes in lithium-ion batteries within the US context. The analysis encompasses factors like feasibility, environmental concerns, security risks, and strategic recommendations, providing a comprehensive overview of the intricate landscape.
Synthetic and natural graphite hold distinct merits, with synthetic graphite standing out for its technical maturity and ample supply. Given the urgency to meet near-term demands, its well-established production processes make it a practical choice. Nonetheless, the absence of active domestic natural graphite mines raises concerns over long-term resilience. The convergence of economic, environmental, and security aspects shapes the trajectory of the US graphite industry.
